Berton Oney, age 91, life long resident of Greenwich, passed away on September 17, 2017 at home surrounded by family. He was born April 8, 1926 in Floyd County, Kentucky, the son of Jim and Jane (Shepherd) Oney.
As a young man, Berton worked on the family farm and was employed at Westinghouse and the Akron Standard Mold. His true passion was raising and hunting coon hounds. After winning the World Championship Coon Hunt in West Point Mississippi in 1967 with U.S. Champion, Grand Nite Champion Vanzant's Sam, Berton became a full time promoter, breeder and hunter of English Coonhounds.
Berton is survived by his wife of 67 years Claris (Whitaker) Oney; daughters, Julia Jane (Mitchel) Hicks of Greenwich, Janet (Joe) Ward of North Fairfield, and Paula (Ed) Fife of Greenwich, along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Charles "Randy" Oney; sister, Ella Sutton Hafer and brothers, Willard, Fred, John, Joe, Henry, Charles, and Virgil.
Friends and family may call Friday, September 22, 2017 from 4-8 pm at Eastman Funeral Home, 49 West Main Street, Greenwich. A service will be held at the Coon Hunters Club, 3221 Plymouth East Road, Greenwich on Saturday at 11 am with Pastor Gary Adkins officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwich Greenlawn Cemetery.
