Carol Girton Obituary

Carol A. Girton of Ruggles, an accomplished musician and highly respected educator, family women and dear friend, passed away peacefully at Hospice of Ashland on Sunday, September 7, 2014 following an extended bout of liver disease.

She was born on December 25, 1947 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania of the late Lillian (Dolly) and Thomas P. Lee. Carol graduated from Warren G. Harding High School, Warren, Ohio in 1966. She continued her formal education at Bowling Green State University obtaining a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1969, and Ashland University with a Master of Education Administration degree in 1998.

While at Bowling Green State University, she met her lifelong companion and soul mate Dennis Girton. On August 23, 2014 they celebrated their 45th anniversary.

Her most significant titles were wife, mother and grandmother. In her free time Carol enjoyed reading, cooking, traveling and spending time with family and friends.

Professionally she was a music educator in Warren City Schools, serving as elementary, junior high and then Director of Choirs at Warren Western Reserve High School and Director of Choirs at Liberty High School. She then entered the field of education administration, first as principal at Ravenna High School and Monroeville High Schools. She became Superintendent of Monroeville Local Schools in 2001 and retired in 2013 as Superintendent of New London Local Schools.

Carol was an adjudicator for the Ohio Music Education Association for the past 20 years and was a vocal soloist at many churches in the Warren area. She also director of music at the Second Christian Church in Warren for 7 years.

She was on many state and regional education boards with the Ohio Department of Education. She established a partnership for music education between New London Schools and the Cleveland Institute of Music and was a grant writer for the Cleveland Council on World Affairs.

Carol was a member of the Masonic Job's Daughters and the Order of Eastern Star, a member of the New London Rotary and the New London Public Library Board.

Carol's family includes her husband, Dennis; her son, Matthew Dennis and her grandson, Logan Matthew.

A memorial celebration led by Pastor Martin Daly of the Ruggles Church will be held on September 13, 2014 at the Ruggles Church, 1364 US Highway 224, New London, Ohio 44851 at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions in Carol's memory may be directed to the Ruggles Church or Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805. Those wishing to do so may send the family a personal condolence and light a candle in your church remembering Carol.
