Else Goebel Obituary

Else Goebel (nee Beschorner) of Henrietta Township passed away on May 18, 2015. Many remember Else as "Mom Goebel" from the Firelands Scout Reservation at the corner of Becker and Gore Orphanage Road.

Else was married to John Goebel, the former ranger at Firelands Scout Reservation. Together they, with the help of many volunteers, built many of the cabins that are in place at the camp today. Else was the cook, and camp nurse during the summers from 1965 to 1988 when John retired as the ranger. Due to her close involvement with the Boy Scout movement and her unselfish helping hand to the thousands of boys that came to camp, she was awarded the Silver Beaver Award in April 2010, one of highest awards a volunteer can earn in scouting. On display at her house is something that is rarely seen, two Silver Beaver Awards, her's and John's

Else and John immigrated from Germany in December of 1951 along with their young son Karl. Sponsored by John's uncle they originally made their home in Lorain. In 1957 after 6 years of study, they both took the Pledge of Allegiance and became citizens of the United States. In 1959 they moved into a home that the two of them constructed on the outskirts of Amherst.

In the late 50's Else worked as a sales clerk for what was then Ted Jacobs on 4th Street in Lorain. After moving into the ranger residence and helping John completely remodel the property that was built in 1862, Else was employed by the Firelands School district for over 20 years as a school bus driver. A position she held even after John's retirement. They made their home on Highway 113 just west of Gore Orphanage Road so they could be close to the camp that they both loved.

Else was preceded in death by her beloved John of 59 years in 2007, an infant daughter Maria Louise of Bendorf Germany, her parents Walter and Theresia Beschorner of Bendorf Germany, a half sister Anna Marie Stock of Hannover Germany and a half brother Karl Balthasar also of Bendorf Germany. Surviving are Karl Goebel of Aurora, CO, Ingrid Goebel Weaver of Oberlin, OH, Patty Goebel Kopcho of Elyria, 4 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 4:30 p.m. at the Firelands Scout Reservation chapel on the Bates Road side of the camp. Her ashes will be buried with those of John at the Henrietta Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Heart of Ohio Council Boy Scouts of America, Museum Fund. (3 North Main Street, Suite 303, Mansfield, OH 44902). Condolences may be given to the Goebel family online at: www.norton-eastmanfuneralhome.com.
