Ernest Hartman Obituary

Ernest Hertzig Hartman, 95, of Wellington, died at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain surrounded by his family on Tuesday, August 29, 2017. Born on August 12, 1922, he was the son of the late Charlie Hartman and Mary (nee Hertzig) Hartman. He was a 1940 graduate of Sullivan High School.

Ernest proudly served in the United States Army Air Corps and the United States Air Force from 1942 to 1982. During WWII flying He served with the 15th Bombardment squadron, Crew 17.Ernest flew military aircraft through 4 decades and with all of his sons and his son-in-law. Marching in the Wellington Memorial Day Parade became a tradition for he and his family and an activity that he participated in for 60 years.

As a civilian, Ernest farmed for a time, and then sold Insurance. He was a life member of the VFW and American Legion, and was a member of the All American Indian Motorcycles Club, 4 Cylinder Motorcycle Club, Commemorative Air Force, the Pittsfield Community Church, and the Wellington Kiwanis. Ernie had a passion for flying, riding motorcycles, working on old bikes and cars, and traveling to Arizona with his wife for the winter months.

Survivors include his children, Ernest Harold (Mary Ann) Hartman, of Huntington, Barney Ray (Linda) Hartman, of Pittsfield, Mary Maxine (Layton) Meininger, of Ashland, James Curtis (Linda) Hartman, of Wellington, and Stuart Eugene (Vicki) Hartman of Oberlin; 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Jean (nee Whitcomb) Hartman and his siblings C. Russell, Florence and Deloris.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, September 1, from 4-8 p.m. at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main Street, Wellington, where services will be held on Saturday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Lee Stull will officiate and burial will follow at Sullivan Southview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Valor House, 221 West 21st Street, Lorain, Ohio 44052.
