Howard F. VerBurg, age 88, of Willard, died Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Mercy Willard Hospital. He was born May 30, 1926 in New London, Ohio, son of the late Garrett and Elnora (Miller) VerBurg. Howard grew up in the Greenwich area and moved to the Willard area in 1974. He was a graduate of Ripley School. He served in the Army/Army Air Corp during WWII, from 1944 until 1946 in the Pacific Theatre where he was an Army Engineer attached to the Air Force Company C Engineer Aviation Battalion. He had farmed his entire life. He also worked for the Wastewater Treatment Plant as Superintendant in Willlard. Howard was a member of the Willard Fire & Rescue Squad. He had worked at the Village of Greenwich and was a Ripley Twp. Trustee. He was a member of the Mt. Hope Lutheran Church, Shiloh, a member of the Farm Bureau, a life member of the NRA, and member of the Shiloh Legion #503 having served as Post Commander. Howard had made maple syrup every year since 1937.
He is survived by his wife, whom he married September 3, 1949, Mary Lou (Koch) VerBurg; his daughters, Donna (Stu) Young and Jeannette (Tom) Hicks all of Norwalk, Nancy (Bill) Jester of Willard; his sons, Perry (Lisa) VerBurg and Kevin (Mary) VerBurg all of Willard; Daughter in law, Linda (Clarence) Fackler of Shelby; Grandchildren, Chris (Christina) VerBurg, Bryan (Jenny) VerBurg, Aaron Gregory all of Shiloh, Jonathon (Lori) Young of Gilbert, Arizona, Jenny Young of Columbus, Charles (Celeste) Hillman of Sandusky, Scott (Vicki) Hillman of Huron, Garrett (Cady) VerBurg of Willard; 13 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Howard Vaughn VerBurg in 1976, his sister, Marjorie Ann Spaide in 1985.
Friends may call from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the Eastman Funeral Home, 49 West Main St., Greenwich and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Mt. Hope Lutheran Church, 29 West Main St., Shiloh with Pastor Blanche Tyree officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Edwards Grove Cemetery, Greenwich.
