Oliver Close Obituary
Oliver S. Close passed away unexpectedly at the age of 77, on Friday, April 1, 2016. He was born on March 4, 1939 in New London, to the late Orrie and Lillian (Hoffman) Close.
He grew up in New London and graduated from New London High School in 1957. Oliver spent his entire life in the New London and Nova area. On November 21, 1959, Oliver married the love of his life Judith. Before her passing in 2008 they had spent 48 years together.
He was first and foremost a farmer. He was passionate about farm preservation and loved animals, wildlife and livestock. He raised deer, elk and beef cows, and was a professional coon hunter. Oliver had many friends and never had a difficult time finding common ground with anyone, regardless of their age or stage in life. He will be missed by many and he cherished his family.
In addition to his farm work, Oliver also spent time at the former Ohio Body and Fireland's Electric in New London.
Oliver was a member of the NFO, UKC, PKC, OAAO and National Elk Breeders Association.
Oliver was the beloved father to Steven & Peggy Close, Jeremy & Mandy Close, and Valerie Close Meadows, all of Ashland; grandchildren, Kimberly Sams, Kaitlyn Close, Jacob Close, Briar Close and Gracie Close; great grandchildren Zoe Ferris and Zephyrus Meadows; step-great grandchildren Hayden and Mason Sams; siblings, Oren Close of Apopka, FL, Orlando Close of Eustis, FL, and Patsy Sue Toole of Geneva, AL. He is also survived by his dog and companion Toby, many, many nieces and nephews and special friend Jean Maxwell Schmid.
In addition to his parents, and wife he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sarah Meadows Ferris; son-in-law Eric (Rik) Meadows, and siblings, Peggy Kuhlman, Billy Dee Close, Orrie Jr., Orlo and Orlie "Mickey" Close.
The visitation for Oliver will be held at Eastman Funeral Home, New London, Tuesday April 5, 2016 from 6-9 pm. A service will be held at the funeral home the next day at 1 pm with Evangelist Charles Mead officiating. Burial will follow on Oliver's farm in Sarah's Garden.
Memorial contributions in Oliver's honor can be given to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142 or Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, OH 44805.
