Mary R (Hartigan) Caley

Mary (Durning) Caley, born on May 19, 1921 entered into rest on Thursday, October 3, 2019.   Mary Rose Hartigan was born the youngest of four children in a family of Irish immigrants in New Haven, Connecticut.  Her family, along with the many other immigrants in her community all suffered through the Great Depression.  Thanks to the generosity of her brother Francis, Mary was able to attend St. Raphael’s School of Nursing in Connecticut, graduating in 1942. She served in WWII as an Army nurse, where she met and married Bill Durning.  They came back to Bill’s native Ohio and started a family.  Bill eventually left the family, and Mary went to work at New London Hospital, and then Fisher-Titus.  She then worked for Dr. Charles Resseger until her retirement.  Mary remarried in 1987 to Donald Caley, but became widowed and returned to her home in Hartland Township.  Mary is remembered as a beautiful person inside and out.  She was such a good and moral person, and was blessed with a hilarious sense of humor!  She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in New London. 

Mary is survived by her children Maryann (Art) Miller, Pat (Bob) Johannsen, Maureen Dreschel (all of Collins); Bill (Jessica) Durning of Fairbanks, AK; Bob Durning of Riddle OR; Mike (Debra) Durning of Ruggles; Robin Chandler of Greenwich; and Kathy Durning of Westerville. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Linda Lachowyn, her husband Donald Caley, three siblings, Betty (Carpenter), Francis, and Eddie, and her parents Edward and Elizabeth Hartigan.

Friends will be received on Sunday, October 6, 2019 from 4-7 pm at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main Street, New London, OH 44851.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 7, at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 18 Park Ave, New London, OH 44851.  Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, New London.   Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.eastmanfuneralhome.com.
