Dorothy Sholes Obituary
Dorothy J. Sholes, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2018 at the Laurels of New London. She was 85 years of age.
Dorothy was born to Wilbur and Lula Smith on September 19, 1932 in McComb, Ohio. She graduated from McComb High School in 1950.
She co-managed Finley Drug in New London and worked at two other pharmacies over a 20 year span. She retired from Firelands Electric Cooperative in 1994 after more than 20 years of service. She also worked with Cardinal Distribution and at TIP Products.
Dorothy loved the Village of New London and served her community as the coordinator of Firelands Ambulance Service from 1978 to 2000 where she led a team of dedicated people who built today's modern service. She was elected as the first female Mayor of New London; serving from 1996 to 1999 chose the motto "The right place at the right time" which remains today.
Dorothy was involved in LaRuy Chapter #82 Order of the Eastern Star for 25 years, New London Rotary Club where she served as president 1999-2000, New London CIC (Community Improvement Corp) and Project Leadership of Huron County Class of 1997.
She enjoyed making crafts and showing dogs. Dorothy was a woman of faith, played the organ at church and loved being able to help others.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, Dan (Laura) Finley of Powell, Ohio, David (Linda) Finley of New London and James Sholes; 8 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her sister, Helen York; husbands, James Finley and Bob Sholes and son, James B. Finley.
A visitation of family and friends will be held at Eastman Funeral Home in New London on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. A service will be held at the Eastman Funeral Home on Wednesday at 11 am with Pastor Tom Matus officiating. Burial will follow in Grove Street Cemetery, New London.
If desired, memorial contributions can be given to the Firelands Ambulance Service, 25 James Street, New London, Ohio 44851.
