Hazel Leota Pitts (nee McConnell), 92, of Wellington, passed away Thursday, January 24, 2019 at home on the family farm. Born on March 9, 1926 in Pittsfield, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Roena (nee Whitney) McConnell. Hazel was a 1944 graduate of Wellington High School and a lifelong resident of Wellington.
Following graduation Hazel worked at Oberlin college for a short time. In November of 1949 she married Dorrell Pitts and moved to their farm just south of Wellington. Hazel was dedicated to her family, supporting her children and her husband, and she was an active participant of the life of the farm up until very recently. Hazel also enjoyed the time she spent with her friends and was equally dedicated to the Lorain County Fair.
Survivors include her children, Ann (Tim) Buchs, Fred (Sandy) Pitts, Sue Pitts, and Sally (Jeff) Stewart; grandchildren Joe (Hannah), Mike (Bethany), Amy (Scott), Adam (Jaci), Lindsey (Chuck), Ashley (Dan), and Kyle; great grandchildren Kaycee, Paige, Addi, Jud, Jax, Jep, Parker, Roston, and Cason; and sisters Ida Clawson and Dorothy Walker. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years Dorrell; and siblings Norman McConnell, Howard McConnell, and Elsie Wise. Hazel's life will be celebrated on Sunday, January 27, at the Wellington Eagles, 631 South Main St, Wellington, 44090; friends and family are invited to come, visit, share and enjoy each others company where a light meal will be provided between the hours of 2 and 5 p.m. A private burial will take place at Greenwood cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to the Dorrell and Hazel Pitts Family Education Fund, through the Wellington Endowment, 305 Union Street, Wellington.
