Marvelle Jones Obituary

Marvelle Weaver Jones, 97, died September 6, 2018. Marvelle was born March 9, 1921 and grew up in Blackburn, NC. Not many people know that she was an excellent athlete, and she was the softball team's pitcher throughout her high school years.

She graduated from the University of N.C. (Women's College) in Greensboro, NC with a degree in Secondary Business education.

Marvelle served as private secretary for the editor and publisher of the Raleigh News Observer.

She met the love of her life, Edward L. Jones, when he was stationed at Ft. Bragg before WWII. Their relationship lasted throughout the war while he was overseas. When he returned, they were married in Greensboro, NC on February 14, 1950, and moved to Litchfield, OH, where she lived the rest of her life.

Marvelle taught first grade in Litchfield, OH in Buckeye School District, until she gave birth to her only child, Rebecca. She quit teaching at that time to stay at home with her daughter.
Marvelle went back to teaching in Buckeye Schools in 1961 as an 8th grade English teacher.

She began teaching in 1963 at Wellington High School, where she taught Business Office Education, shorthand, and typing. Marvelle loved her students and often spoke of "her girls" in BOE.

Marvelle retired from WHS in 1984 after 25 years of teaching, and enjoyed traveling with her husband and friends. She also loved staying home with her grandchildren, Carrie and Chris, with whom she had close relationships. Her favorite place other than her home in Penfield Township was the family beach house in North Myrtle Beach that was built by her father in 1953.

Marvelle enjoyed gardening, yard work, cooking, and was an expert seamstress.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Young, son in law, Michael Young; grandchildren Carrie Young and Christopher Young and his wife, Sarah (Manning) Young. She is also survived by her nieces, Agnes Cline and Evelyn Cochrane; and her cherished caregiver for many years, Barbara Teter, who has become part of the family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward L. Jones, parents Lattie Earl Weaver and Carrie (Spiegel) Weaver, her sister, Margaret McCaslin, her brother, Carroll Weaver, and her niece, Jo Anne Potts.

Friends and family will be received on Wednessday, September 12 from 6-8 pm at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main Street, Wellington. A private burial will take place at Penfield Cemetery at a later date. Marvelle's family suggests memorials to the donor's choice of charity.
