Allene E. Shepherd, age 90, of Wellington passed on July 18, 2010 at the Hospice of the Western Reserve in Cleveland. Mrs. Shepherd was born August 17, 1919 in Grandview, Washington. She graduated from Prosser Senior High School in 1938. She attended Washington State Normal School (now Central Washington University) between 1938 and 1941 before moving to San Jose, California to work for the United States Postal Service.
Mrs. Shepherd relocated to Wellington and cherished her only child, Jay, when he was born in 1946. She worked at the family business, Shepherd Chevrolet-Oldsmobile, for two decades. During that time, she became a licensed pilot and liked to fly the family plane.
Mrs. Shepherd's thirst for knowledge continued throughout her entire life and she constantly sought out opportunities to learn. She earned Bachelor of Science in Education and Master of Science degrees from Kent State University in 1969 and 1971. She received a Teaching Certificate for biological science in the State of Ohio and continued her studies at Ohio State University in Columbus. Most recently, she embraced the technology of the internet to conduct research on the web while e-mailing companions across the country.
Health, nutrition, and exercise were a vital part of Mrs. Shepherd's personal and professional life. She worked as a staff dietitian at Columbus' Grant Hospital and Akron General Medical Center between 1975 and 1978. She served as supervisory dietitian for the WIC program at the City of Akron Health Department between 1978 and 1986.
Mrs. Shepherd spent most of her retirement in Wellington. She was an avid naturalist and loved to study birds and plants. She made regular trips to area parks to photograph wildlife.
An accomplished seamstress, Mrs. Shepherd made most of the clothes that she wore throughout her life. She was particularly proud of her purses and hats.
Survivors include her grandson, Patrick Shepherd, and his partner, Jason Lansdale, of Cleveland; her sister, Anna Marie Dallas and her husband, Harold Dallas of Longview, Washington; her daughter-in-law, Judy Shepherd, of Wellington; and, her beloved nephew, Gerlo Isaminger and his partner, Bob Slater, of Cathedral City, California. She was preceded in death by her son, Jay Shepherd, her sister, Bethel Isaminger, and her brother, Gerald Rasmussen.

Mrs. Shepherd will be buried alongside her son at Greenwood Cemetery in Wellington. No service will be held at her request.
