Benjamin L. Derrick, Sr., age 85, of Wellington died Friday, November 30 at Lorain Community Health Partners. He was born September 5, 1922 in Shamokin, PA to the late Benjamin and Cora (Latsha) Derrick. Ben had been a resident of Wellington since 1948.
During the 1930s, Ben worked for the Civilian Conservation Corp. He retired from the United States Steel Mill in Lorain after 37 years of service. Ben was a fifty-year member of the Wellington First United Methodist Church and served as a trustee for the church. His church and church family were an important part of his life.
Ben enjoyed fishing, cooking, and spending time with his family and grandkids. He also loved to paint.
Survivors include his two sons, Robert L. (Sandra) Derrick of Sullivan, and Benjamin L. (Bridget) Derrick Jr., of Wellington, and six grandchildren, Dawn, Kyle, Josh, Katy, Anna, and Drew. Ben is also survived by two sisters, Gladys Bastress and Norma Dent, both of PA. He was preceded in death by his wife, May Derrick in 1997, and three sisters, Grace Dudeck, Hilda Derrick, and Margie Lzalenski.
Friends may call from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at the Wellington First United Methodist Church, 127 Park Place on Tuesday, December 4th and on Wednesday, December 5th from 10 am until the time of funeral service at 11 am. Rev. Lea Mahan will officiate and burial will follow at River Road Cemetery in LaGrange.
