Benjamin Franklin Runyon, age 74, of Fitchville died unexpectedly on Sunday, December 3, 2023 at his residence. Born April 23, 1949 to the late Edward and Ersie Runyon in West Virginia, he had lived in Fitchville since 1996.

Benjamin was a veteran of the United States Army, having earned a Purple Heart and Bronze Star in Vietnam. He then worked as a mechanic until his retirement. Benjamin was a member of the North Eaton Church of God where he enjoyed participating in worship services. An excellent musician, Benjamin could play any string instrument. He could often be found picking a banjo, playing blue grass along with worship music, and spending time with his family. Though singing was not his favorite, Benjamin had a wonderful voice and the family will cherish recordings of his music that he made in his small home-made studio.

Benjamin married his beloved wife, Patricia "Patty" (Duesenberry), on his birthday this year, April 23, 2023 and she survives in Fitchville. Additional survivors include his children, Benjamin John (Kelly) Runyon of Elyria, Nicole Lynn (Greg) Thompson of New London, and Lora Ann (Brock Coulter) Runyon of Oberlin, and Dylan (Shyloe Parrett) Runyon of North Fairfield; step-children, Amie Shelton of Elyria, and Kevin (Brittany) Shelton of Wellington; three grandchildren, Gregory Thompson, Te'a Runyon, and Jené Thompson; and two great-grandchildren, Layana Sanders, and Amaiya Runyon.

Benjamin was preceded in death by his previous wife, Wilma Runyon, and eleven siblings.

Private services will be observed at the convenience of the family, with interment at Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled Veterans of America or the Wounded Warrior Project.
