Obituary

Bennie Anthony "BJ" Terry Jr., died Thursday, November 8, 2018 surrounded by his loving family after a short but strong battle with cancer. Born on May 30, 1951 in Norwalk, he was the son of the late Lillie Bell (nee Beck) and Bennie A. Terry Sr. Ben grew up mostly in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1969. Ben was a graduate of The Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science in 1976 and worked for a time as funeral director at Dicken's Funeral Home. In 1981, he graduated with an Associates of Arts Degree from LCCC and became co-owner of Brinker's Barn. He worked at Oberlin College for 35 yrs. and taught evening plumbing classes at EHOVE and LCJVS for a total of 12 yrs. Ben was a member of the Brighton Congregational Church as well as an active member of Boy Scout Troop 414 where he served as an assistant scout master. He was also involved with Autism Speaks and helped organize fundraisers. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed fishing, camping and taking hikes in the woods. Friends would often find Ben walking, accompanied by the family dog, Kora. Raising a large vegetable garden was his passion. Most precious to Ben were his wife and son, and he cherished every moment with them. Survivors include his loving wife of nearly 30 years, Debra (nee Popella) Terry; son Travis Terry; sisters Saundra (Dennis) Forthofer, of Huron, Blanche Terry, of Columbus, and Lillie Bell (Walter) Merrill, of Columbia Station; Uncle Russell Beck, of Avon; many nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and great nephews; mother and father-in-law Warren and Carol Popella. Ben was preceded in death by his brother Dale Terry, infant niece Valerie Felton as well as numerous aunts and uncles. Friends and family will be received on Friday, November 16, from 4-7 p.m. at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main Street, Wellington. A memorial service will be held on Saturday the 17 at the Brighton Congregational Church, 51011 State Rt 18, Wellington, beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor John Burgess officiating, burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery, Wellington.
