Obituary

Betty Jean Wheaton passed away Tuesday evening, October 12, 2010 at the Rehabilitation and Nursing Center at Firelands in New London, Ohio. She was born May 17, 1925, the daughter of the late Henry E. and Edith Sanders Neel in New London, Ohio. On November 23, 1946 she was married to George Price Wheaton of Norwalk, Ohio by the Rev. Paul S. Mellish of the First Presbyterian Church in Norwalk. She was a 1944 graduate of New London High School and worked at the Rotary Printing Co. in New London until her marriage in 1946. She lived in Flint, Michigan from 1952 until 1996 when she came back to New London after the death of her husband in 1995. Betty was a 14 year member of the Broome-Wood Post 292 American Legion Auxiliary, The New London Area Historical Society and a 66 year member of O.E.S Althea Chapter #438. She is survived by a daughter, Carol Ann (Michael) Campbell of Olympia, Washington, a son, James P. (Linda) Wheaton of Elgin, South Carolina and three grandchildren, Nathan and James Jr. Wheaton of Elgin, South Carolina and Amanda (Brian) Verner of Canton, Georgia and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Orile Neel Fackler (Maurice) Selzer of Venice, Florida and Mary Neel Enderby (Ted) Mahl of New London, Ohio and two brothers, Doyle Neel and Vaughn (Lois) Neel of New London, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, George Price Wheaton in 1995, a sister, Thelma Ruth Neel Potter and a brother, Graydon Harold Neel. Friends may call on Friday October 15th from 1:00 p.m. until the time of the 2:00 p.m. service at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main Street, New London with Pastor Cathy Ake officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc, Michigan. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the New London Area Historical Society, 210 East Main Street, New London, Ohio 44851 or the New London Public Library, 67 South Main Street, New London, Ohio 44851.
