Blake J. Hamer, 90, of Wellington, died Thursday evening, April 14, 2016 at Mercy Allen Hospital. He was born on March 18, 1926 in Berlin Twp. to the late Harry and Beulah Hamer. Blake was a 1944 graduate of Berlin Local High School and following graduation he proudly served in the United States Army during WWII. While in the service he served in France and Okinawa participating in both the European and Pacific fronts.
Blake worked as a manager with grain and feed elevators for many years, managing Co Ops in Collins, Shinrock, Buckland, and for 26 years the Farmers Co Op (now Town and Country) in LaGrange. He was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Wellington, the Wellington Eagles Aerie #2051, Elyria VFW post #1079, and the LaGrange Lions Club. Blake will be remembered as a hard worker who enjoyed farming, raising hogs, and wood working. He also enjoyed time away camping with his family. Most of all Blake cherished time with his family especially his grandson and great-grandsons.
Blake is survived by his loving wife of 67 years Joanne (nee Schneider) Hamer; son Bill (Sue) Hamer of Wellington; grandson Bryan (Kim) Hamer of Wellington; and great-grandsons Braden and Caleb. He was preceded in death by his daughter Patti Hamer, sister Betty Izzard, and nephew Tom Schneider.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 17, beginning at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 140 South Main St., Wellington, 44090. Burial will take place at a later date at Peaks Cemetery in Berlin Twp.
