Obituary

Byron M. Urie, 91, of Greenwich, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at his home surrounded by family. Born in Ashland County on October 14, 1918, Byron was a son of the late Robert and Maude Urie. Byron lived most of his life in the Shiloh and Greenwich areas and was a 1936 graduate from Shiloh High School. During World War II, Byron served in the United States Army in the 4th Infantry Division, 3rd Battalion Headquarters Company and the 22nd Infantry in Germany. He also took part in the D-Day Landings at Utah Beach in Normandy, France. The Ohio Senate awarded him the Normandy Certificate of Honor and Medal for his participation in the liberation of France. Additionally, Bryon's unit received two Presidential Citations for the D-Day Landings and action at Battle of the Bulge. A proud veteran, Byron was a 66 year member of the Shiloh American Legion Post 503. For many years, he farmed and also worked at Westinghouse in Mansfield. Byron later retired from Akron Standard Mold in Greenwich. A loving husband, father and grandfather, Bryon was well known by family and friends as being a good, honest man who found great pleasure in giving his time to many. Byron was a man of many skills who treasured reading and enjoyed mowing. Byron leaves behind his beloved wife, Billie C. (nee McQuillen) Urie; children, Donna (Bob) Adams of Shelby, Roberta (Dave) Sherman of Greenwich and Carl (Lynn) Urie of Ontario; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Byron is also survived by his sister, Marjorie Frakes of Shelby. He was preceded in death by his brother, James Urie and a great grandson, Kyle. A celebration of Byron's life for family and friends will be held Saturday, July 31 from 1-4 p.m. at his residence, 1530 Baseline Road, Greenwich. A private family burial with military rites will take place at Edwards Grove Cemetery, Greenwich on Thursday. The family requests that donations in memory of Byron be given to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
