Mr. Charles (Chuck) Howard Oney was born in Wellington, Ohio, on September 6, 1923, and passed from this life in New London, Ohio at home, surrounded by his family, on October 22, 2012, having attained the age of 89 years and 7 weeks. Chuck graduated from Wellington High School in 1942 and like many others of his generation entered the Army serving his country during WWII. After the war Chuck returned to Wellington where he eventually took a job with Fruehauf. He married Mary Vivian Latteman on March 24, 1951, and from this union two daughters were born, Christiann and Charlene. Chuck had a great passion for history, especially the Civil War era. He enjoyed traveling to various battle sites and watching reenactments of famous battles. In the early 1970's his love of history led him to work with other like minded individuals to establish Wellington's Spirit of '76 Museum where he worked as a trustee and was a long time curator for the museum. His love of history sent him on a journey to discover his family roots and he spent many long hours working on the family genealogy tracing his family to the First Families of Ohio and one branch to their arrival into the United States in the late 1700's. Chuck was active in local politics as well, serving the community as a member of the elections board and eventually serving as a member of the town council. For many years he drove the senior bus, visited with those who lived in the nursing homes, and delivered meals on wheels to community shut-ins. Charles Oney was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest P. and Ethel L.(Gadfield) Oney, his wife of 48 years, Mary Vivian, two brothers, Robert and Richard, and two sisters, Linda Gilbert and Patricia R. Oney. Left to mourn his passing are his daughters, Christiann O. Smith (Sidney), of St. Robert, MO, Charlene R. Calala (Robert), of New London, Ohio, his dear companion, Loretta Litteral, of Michigan, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, one brother, Earnest R. Oney, one sister, Arlene Rosta, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Chuck's family will greet friends from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main Street, Wellington, and on Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services at 11 a.m. with Pastor Larry Nocella officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Wellington with military rites. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Spirit of '76 Museum.
