Charles L. Hawkins, age 78, of Greenwich, died Saturday, July 21, 2012 at Hospice of North Central Ohio, Ashland. He was born January 14, 1934 in Willard, Ohio, son of the late Harry B. and Edith W. (Wooley) Hawkins. He was raised in Greenwich where he was a 1952 Greenwich High School graduate. Charles lived in New Hampshire for 13 years and has lived in Greenwich since 1968. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War where he had served on a Navy Submarine. Charles drove truck for several trucking company's having logged in over 3 1/2 million miles. He had driven truck for the Wikel Trucking Co., St. Johnsbury Trucking Co., W.L. Meade and for Ryder Ranger now known as P.I.E. trucking company. After retirement from trucking he provided transportation for the Mennonite and Amish community. Charles was a life member of the Greenwich American Legion and belonged to the Greenwich V.F.W. He was very supportive of his grandchildren and their activities.
He is survived by his wife, Rita H. (Laplume) Hawkins, whom he married July 17, 1954; his children, Theresa (Don) Pettit of Syracuse, New York, Tim (Donna) Hawkins of Greenwich, John (Robin) Hawkins of Mansfield and Harry (Ladda) Hawkins of Savannah; 12 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren; his cousin, Marilyn Gilger of Mansfield; 3 nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Hawkins and sister in law, Jean Hawkins.
Friends may call from 2 ' 4 p.m. and 6 ' 8 p.m. Monday, July 23, 2012 at the Ripley Church, 4130 South Edwards Rd. where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor John Bouquet officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Edwards Grove Cemetery,Greenwich. Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Dr., Ashland, Ohio 44805.
