Clarence Edward Smith, 89, of Norwalk, passed away peacefully on May 28, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on March 13, 1937, in Norwalk, to the late Leonard J. and Agnes M. (Conney) Smith.
A lifelong resident of the area, Clarence graduated from St. Paul High School in 1955. Following graduation, he proudly served in the United States Army. After returning home, he worked for Norwalk Furniture for six years and later for Metropolitan Life for twenty years. He concluded his working career as a mail carrier with the United States Postal Service, a position he greatly enjoyed for nearly twenty years.
Clarence was a devoted member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Norwalk, where he and his late wife, Judith, especially enjoyed participating in the St. Paul Parish Festival. Family was at the center of Clarence’s life, and he often said that his greatest accomplishment was his children. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening.
He is survived by his children, Mark E. (Lydia) Smith, Kristi (Karl) Washburn, Deborah (James) Rhoad, Stasia Howell, Michael (Jennifer) Smith, and Jennifer (Christopher) Nagel; his grandchildren, Kayla, Jessica, Samantha, Benjamin, Jacob, Sarah, Rachael, Julia, Spencer, Quentin, Catherine, Noah, Brandon, Leah and Alyssa; great-grandchildren, Tomasina, William, Austen, Louise, Elise, Maryn, Noah, Maryella, Elizabeth, and Henry; his friend and companion, Lois Cherry; and his dog, Jack.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Paul Smith, Eileen Barman, and Mildred Greenwald.
The Smith family will receive family and friends at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98. West Main Street, Norwalk, Ohio on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a Rosary taking place at the end of the visitation period. A funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, June 4, 2026, at St. Paul Catholic, 91 East Main St. Norwalk, Ohio at 10:30 a.m. and burial will follow at St. Paul Catholic Cemetery.
