Clyde William Stanfield, age 78, passed away early Wednesday morning, April 29, 2009 at his home in Wellington, Ohio after a year-long illness. He was born in Clarksfield, Ohio on October 27, 1930 to Clyde and Lucille (Sly) Stanfield and spent his youth attending school and working with his father in their floor refinishing business in several communities throughout Ohio, including Clarksfield, Middletown, Savanna, and Sullivan. Clyde joined the U.S. Army in 1948 and initially served in the reconstruction of post-war Japan as a Sergeant in the 65th Engineers before serving in some of the first major battles of the Korean War. Clyde married his wife, Genevieve Peterson, following his military discharge from Camp McCoy, Wisconsin in 1952. He then resumed work at the Pfaudler plant in Elyria, Ohio as a stainless steel finisher. In 1953, Clyde and Genevieve moved to Wellington and began raising their family which grew to 5 children. Over the years, Clyde enjoyed fishing (especially with his in-laws in Minnesota), archery, chess, golfing, collecting, woodworking, remodeling, and landscaping. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles for many years. When Pfaudler in Elyria closed operations, Clyde ended his first career of 37 years and began his second career of 20 years at Farm and Home Hardware in Wellington where he loved utilizing his lifetime of accumulated skills to solve customer problems and to otherwise care for customer needs. He is survived by his wife Genevieve of 57 years; four daughters, Marsha (Mark) Gilger of Doylestown, Suanne (Steve) Murphy of Audubon, NJ, Robin (Jeff) Ewell of Wellington, and Janet (Richard) Barnes of New London; one son, Shayne (Colleen) Stanfield of Toledo, and a total of 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Theodore (Marge) Stanfield of Nevada and Marjorie (Jim) Lowther of Wellington. Clyde was preceded in death by his parents and one grandchild, Michael Murphy.
