Ray Wolfe, Jr., age 87, of Collins, died Monday, April 14, 2008 at the Ohio Veteran's Home in Sandusky after a lengthy illness. Mr. Wolfe was born October 30, 1920 in Decatur, Alabama, son of the late Coy Raymond and Bessie May (Stewart) Wolfe, Sr.
Ray had lived most of his life in Hartland Twp.; he graduated in 1942 from New London High School, where he played football. He farmed most of his life and was a self employed truck driver who did hauling in the area. He also plowed snow in Hartland Twp. for many years. Ray was a Hartland Twp. Trustee.
Mr. Wolfe served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Africa with the 9th Infantry division and in Italy with the 3rd Infantry division. He served with General George Patton and was wounded 7 times and the last time being in the battle of Anzio. Ray was awarded a purple heart and a silver star. He was a life member of the Norwalk VFW and a member of the New London American Legion Broome-Wood Post #292 and the DAV. He enjoyed his Army reunions. Ray was an avid sports fan for New London and Western Reserve Schools.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Jane (Roger) Garner and Isa (Tom) Bement, all of Hartland Twp.; a daughter in law, Judy (Hodges) Wolfe of Effingham, IL; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and a sister, Lila Meyers of Norwalk. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty (Cassell) J. Wolfe in 1985; 2 sons, Mark Wolfe in 1968 and Max Wolfe in 1997;a brother, James Wolfe; and 2 sisters, Louise Dean and Eva Hite.
Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of funeral service at 2 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2008. Pastor Todd Froehlich will be officiating and burial will follow at the Hartland Cemetery, Collins, Ohio.
