Danny (Dan) Whitaker of Greenwich, Ohio passed away on August 5, 2011 following a brave and courageous battle with cancer. Dan was born on January 20, 1947 in Gunlock, KY to Willie and Ruth (Hale) Whitaker. He graduated from Mapleton High School in 1965.
Dan retired from RR Donnelley in 2009 after 43 ' yrs of employment. Dan was a member of The Ripley Church, Greenwich OH, the American Legion Post 280 and the NRA. He was a Staff Sgt with the Ohio Military Reserve and a member of The Ohio Search and Rescue until his illness disallowed him from participation. Dan served his country during the Vietnam War in the US Army as a communication specialist. He loved God, his family, and his country. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns, the Cleveland Indians and OSU football.
Dan is survived by his wife, Regina (Strausbaugh)Whitaker; sons Claude of North Fairfield and Daniel of New London; daughter Tracey (Kyle) Marett of New London; stepsons, Robert (Lynn) Detterman of Willard, Brian (Dawn) Detterman of Findlay, Cory (Jerri) Detterman of Ashland and Kurt (Maria) Detterman of New London;
fourteen grandchildren, Breanne, Katie and Abby Marett, Lauren and Brady Detterman, Aidan, Anna and Allie Detterman, Janessa and Dylan Kipp, Micah Epling, Ilina Detterman and Kaitlyn and Kade Detterman; brothers and sisters, Judy Starcher, Regina Noble, Lanny Whitaker, Linzie Oney, Alma Hopkins, Rita Bowling, LaDonna Hicks, April Vandall and step-sister Louanna Hall. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Willie Whitaker, Ruth (Hale) Whitaker Oney and stepfather, Virgil Oney.
Calling hours will be held on Monday, August 8, 2011 from 4-8 p.m. at The Ripley Church, 4130 Edwards Road, Greenwich and a memorial service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Eric Robinson officiating. Memorial donations may be made to The Ripley Church or Mercy Willard Hospital Foundation.
