Darl E. Walter, age 81, of Greenwich, died Thursday, July 8, 2010 at Norwalk Memorial
Home after a lengthy illness. He was born December 9, 1928, in Willard, son of the late
Harry J. and Gladys (Newhouse) Walter. Darl grew up in Boughtonville and has lived
in Greenwich since 1950. He was a 1946 graduate of the Greenwich High School . Darl
had worked for the B&O Railroad as a young man. He worked at Ballonoff Metal
Products in New London where he became plant manager, then became plant manager at
Kent Sporting Goods in New London where he retired in 1990 as a co-owner. He was a
member of the Greenwich Church of Christ where he was a former Elder, Sunday School
Teacher, and church treasurer. Darl had been active with the Greenwich Boy Scouts.
He was a 60 year Mason of the Golden Rule F&AM 562 Willard and a former New London Rotary member. Darl served on the South Central School Board for several terms and senior enrichment board and senior enrichment foundation. Darl was a Red Cross volunteer who was awarded the Firelands Hero Award in 2007 for being an outstanding blood donor. Darl loved reading, camping, traveling with his family and gardening. He also loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Clara (Andrew) Walter; his children,
Loretta (Randy) Smith of Monroevillle, Ronald (Cindy) Walter of Tiffin; grandchildren, Chad (Jaime) Smith, Bryce (Tiffany) Smith, Brandon (Amanda) Smith, Nic (Christy) Walter, Ryan (Lora) Walter, Seth Walter, Luke (Andrea) Walter; step-grandchild, Callie (Tony) Horning; 9 Great grandchildren; brother, Carlton Walter of Carson City, Nevada, his sister, Shirley (John) Rhoades of Mansfield, his brother in law, Willard M. Andrew of Ashland. He was preceded in death by his sisters-in-law Lucille Andrew and Sally Walter.
Friends may call from 2'5 p.m., Sunday, July 11, 2010 at the Eastman Funeral Home,
49 West Main St., Greenwich. Friends may also call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of
the funeral service at 11:00 a.m., Monday at the Greenwich Church of Christ, with
Pastor David B. Manley officiating. Burial will follow at Greenwich Greenlawn
