Darwin Wonders, 91 of Ashland died Thursday, September 6, 2007 at his home after several years of declining health. He was born in Ruggles township on November 4, 1915, the son of Roscoe and Zuelah Thompson Wonders. He lived his entire life in the Ashland County area.
Darwin was an avid fisherman, and was fortunate to have spent 21 winters of retirement in the Bradenton, Florida area as a snowbird. Prior to retirement, he was a farmer. He also painted barns and houses for over 25 years.
His loving wife Eva Brill Papay Wonders, whom he married June 5, 1993, survives him. He is also survived by the four children that he raised, Jan Briley Mushett of Norwalk, Marsha Briley Gerhart of Ashland, Ann Wonders of Norwalk, and Scott (Patricia) Wonders of Ruggles Township. A sister, Phyllis Bliss of North Carolina also survives him.
Darwin first married in 1940 to Mable Weaver Wonders who predeceased him in 1952. He married again in 1953 to Doris Tanner Briley Wonders who died in 1978. In 1980, he married P. Laureine Fetter Simon Wonders who predeceased him in 1987. He married for the fourth time to Marion Rumsey Snyder Wonders in 1990. She preceded him in death in 1991. Darwin was a loving companion to each of these beloved wives as they each succumbed to cancer.
The family will receive visitors on Sunday, September 9, 2007 6 to 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. until the time of the 11 a.m. funeral service Monday, September 10, 2007 at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St. New London. Rev. John Guliano of The United Methodist Church of Savannah will be presiding. Burial will be in the Ruggles Cemetery.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Darwin's name to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Dr. Ashland, Ohio 44805.
