Donald L. Griffin, 79, of Willard, died Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Hillside Acres Nursing Home, Willard. He was born November 16, 1931 in Collins, Ohio, son of the late, Claude and Mabel (Bruckhart) Griffin. Donald was a 1949 graduate of Greenwich High School. He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army in Japan during the Korean Conflict. Donald married Ruth Gemmel on November 7, 1959 at Mount Hope Lutheran Church, Shiloh. He worked as a Millwright, building and repairing grain elevator equipment for the Sanders Company, Greenwich, the Huron County Landmark, Clarksfield, Clemons Elevator Service, Greenwich. After retirement he worked for Felver Builders, Shiloh. Donald enjoyed bowling at New London Lanes for more than 30 years, taking grandchildren fishing, looking for arrowheads and walking in the woods. Woodworking was a hobby in later years. He mowed yards for a number of years, plowed snow, often leaving before people could stop to thank him. He enjoyed cutting wood for the woodburning stove. Planted a large garden for many years giving away bushels of excess produce. If someone needed help and he was able to do it, he was there. He liked horses and was assistant advisor to Ray Sanders for the Mane and Tail Saddle Club of Greenwich. He was a 40 plus year member of the Greenwich American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Griffin; sons, Gary (Laura) Griffin of Honduras, Allen (Melanie) Griffin of Mansfield, Brian (Cindy) Griffin of Willard; grandchildren, Brandi (Eric) Shepherd of North Monroeville, Kyle (Chelsea) Griffin of Mansfield, Allen (Ava) Griffin, Jr. of Arkansas, Rachel and Joshua Griffin of Mansfield; 3 great-grandchildren; brothers, Earl and Russell Griffin of Tennessee, Larry Griffin of Virginia; sisters, Helen Griffin of Utah Phyllis Dewitt of Shelby; 9 nieces, 3 nephews and numerous great nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by his brother, Robert.
Friends will be received Saturday, November 5, 2011 from 9:30 a.m. until A Celebration of Life at 10:30 a.m. at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 308 Myrtle Ave., Willard with Pastor Roger Thompson officiating. A luncheon will follow the service at the church. Memorials if desired, may be given to the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Alzheimer's Association , Northwest Ohio Chapter, 780 Park Ave. West, Mansfield, Ohio 44906 or donors favorite charity.
