After graduating from Collinwood High School, Doris worked as a secretary at The Reliance Electric Company in Cleveland. She met Roy Silvieus at Geneva-on-the-Lake, and they were married on October 15, 1952. Doris held various jobs throughout her life, including Price Checker for Stop and Shop, working with Kelly Girls, serving as a proofreader for The Star Beacon, and working in the Kingsville Elementary School Library as well as with the Kingsville Public Library. She enjoyed conversing with people and passed on the "art of conversation" to her children and grandchildren. In 1968, she and Roy purchased her dream house on Creamer Road in Kingsville, overlooking the Ashtabula River, their pond, and waterfall. There, her passion for gardening flourished. She became involved with the Ashtabula County Master Gardeners and was honored as Master Gardener of the Year in 2005. Doris also attended Eagleville Bible Church in Rockville, OH.
