Dorrell Pitts, age 79, of Wellington, died Sunday, March 9, 2008 at Allen Community Hospital in Oberlin. He was born May 23, 1928 in Oberlin to Fred N. and Vernona (nee Cowie) Pitts. Dorrell was a 1946 graduate of Wellington High School.
Dorrell was a farmer all his life. He was a member of the Lorain County Fair Board for 42 years and was honored with several awards for his service. Dorrell was in charge of the Tractor Pulls at the fair for 40 years and was actively involved with the Ohio State Tractor Pull Association. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau, the Wellington Hospital Board, the Farm Service Association Board, the Township Zoning Board of Appeals, where he served as longtime secretary, and the former LaGrange Farmer's CoOp, now known as Town and Country, and the Pittsfield Community Church.
Dorrell loved spending time with his grandkids and was known as 'Gramps' or 'Pops' to many people in the community. Attending county fairs was his passion and he enjoyed tractor pulls. Dorrell was a sports fan and rarely missed a Dukes sporting event.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Hazel (nee McConnell); four children, Ann (Tim) Buchs of Henrietta, Fred (Sandy) Pitts, Sue Pitts, and Sally (Jeff) Stewart, all of Wellington; and seven grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his stepfather, Jim Sayers.
Friends may call on Sunday, March 16th in the Fair Hall Building at the Lorain County Fairgrounds from 1 pm until the time of celebration service at 2 pm. A luncheon will follow the service and a private burial will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in care of the Lorain County Fair Board, P.O. Box 15, Wellington, OH 44090 toward a scholarship fund.
