Obituary

Douglas G. Lash, 80, of New London, died peacefully at his home, Wednesday, October 27, 2010 He was born in February 27, 1930, in New London, son of the late Joseph and Winifred (Wilson) Lash. Doug was a 1948 graduate of New London High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Doug and his father operated Lash Buick Agency in New London for over 60 years and Doug being a partner for 39 years. He was a 31 year volunteer fireman for the New London Fire Department. He was Boy Scout and Cub Scout master for several years in New London, and was a member and past president of the New London Rotary Club. Doug served on the Village council for one term. He was a member of the New London United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member of the New London American Legion Broome Wood Post 292, where he had served as Post Commander from 1961-1963. With other Legion members he had assisted in the construction of a picnic pavilion at the local recreation park, assisted with two additions to the Legion building, helped to recruit local volunteers to help in all of the construction projects. Douglas was known for his love and skill of woodworking and he put together a wooden and glass showcase displaying some local discovered items of Father Duffy, a survivor of the Baton Death March. He became the Huron County Commander in 1976. During his service he assisted in the selection of Boys State participants and attended many high school assemblies representing Americanism. He had served the Fifth District as Commander of the American Legion during 1981-82. He enjoyed the many hours spent traveling throughout the District, meeting other veterans and had the honor of inducting new officers. Douglas continued his volunteerism through serving as Department Assistant Sergeant of Arms in 1982-83, then working toward his three year term on the Finance Committee of the Department of Ohio in 1985 thru 1987. Doug gained experience and respect from his peers and was nominated and elected to Department Treasurer of Ohio 1988-89. He attended numerous State and National American Legion Conventions and had served in the delegate capacity. Throughout his service to the American Legion, he inspired many people to get involved in their local, district and state levels. Doug was a driver and furnished transportation for the Huron County Veterans and drove the men and women to the VA Medical Center in Cleveland. He had accumulated 4,800 hours with the Veterans Assoc. He was also a member of the Norwalk V.F.W. and the Korean War Veterans Assoc., Elyria. Throughout his dedicated service to his community and country, he was a loving husband, devoted father and proud grandfather. He is survived by his daughter and son in law, SueAnn and Michael Haddix and his granddaughter Amanda Elizabeth Haddix all of South Vienna, Ohio; his sister in law, Maurine Bohnslav of Virginia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan J. Lash in 1999, his brothers, Gary and Rodney Lash, his sister and brother in law, Patty and Ty Cobb. Friends may call from 2 ' 4 and 6 ' 8 p.m. Monday, November 1, 2010 at the Eastman Funeral Home, 200 West Main St., New London where funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday with Pastor Cathy Ake officiating. Burial with military rites will follow at Grove Street Cemetery, New London. Memorials if desired may be given to the Huron County Veterans Administration, 130 Shady Lane Dr., Norwalk, Ohio 44857.
