Elmer E. Smith III age 101 died July 5th, 2024, at Hillview Retirement Center where he had lived since 2006.
He was born on February 20, 1923, in Monongahela, Pennsylvania, to Elmer E. Smith, Jr. and Rachel Elizabeth Carroll Smith. He was their only child.
After graduating from Monongahela High School in 1941, he attended the University of Pittsburgh until he enlisted in the army in the fall of 1942. He spent thirty-seven months in the military, seventeen of them in Europe with a cannon company of the 94th Infantry Division in the campaigns of Northern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace and Central Europe.
After his discharge from the military, he earned a degree from Capital University, Columbus, Ohio where he met Anna Pauline Vogel of Willard, Ohio. They were married in August of 1952. That same year he entered the teaching profession and over a career that spanned thirty-three years he taught at four Ohio schools; Leesville followed by Lake Township, then Norwalk High and finally Pioneer Joint Vocational school from which he retired in 1985.
He enjoyed puzzles of all kinds and spent many hours cleaning and refinishing furniture.
He was active in St. Peters Evangelical Lutheran Church, Norwalk, and was a volunteer guide at the Thomas Edison Birthplace Museum in Milan, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1969, his father in 1972 and his wife in 2008.
Survivors include his three sons: Bruce of Omaha, Nebraska, Brian of Columbus, Ohio and Brent of Lafayette, Georgia, as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
A graveside service for Elmer and Anna will be held on Friday, August 30, 2024, at Woodlawn Cemetery, beginning at 11 a.m., with Pastor Ann Marshall officiating.
