Obituary

Eugene H. Felter, 92, of Providence Care Center, Sandusky, died Sunday, May 5, 2019 in Stein Hospice Center, Sandusky, from the effects of a stroke suffered just four days earlier. He was born on November 19, 1926 to the late Joseph and Iva (nee Hafer) Felter, was a life-long resident of Norwalk and graduate from Norwalk St Paul.

Eugene was a decorated World War II veteran and participant to history on board the USS Missouri during the Japanese surrender of World War II. He spent much of his service aboard the USS Monadnock, a mine layer. After witnessing the surrender of the Japanese on Sept. 2, 1945, Mr. Felter received a gold-handled sword from one of the Japanese Admirals. His other claim to fame was being aboard the first U.S. ship to sail into Japan Harbor the day after the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb. The ship was greeted by a sea of white surrender flags.

Eugene was a dedicated husband and loving father who enjoyed traveling especially trips to Amish Country with his wife Florence and to see his sons.

He is survived by sons Joe (Debra) Felter of Flint, TX and Phil (Cheryl) Curran of Fork, MD; granddaughter Alysha Felter and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Eugene was preceded in death by his wife Florence (nee Post) Felter and brothers, Joe and Raymond; sisters, Theresa and Iva Jane.

Visitation will be Friday, May 10, 2019, from 3 - 5 p.m. at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main St., Norwalk. Funeral Mass will be held at St Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 10:30 am with Msgr. Ken Morman officiating. Burial will follow in St Paul Catholic Cemetery next to his wife Florence with full Naval military honors.
