Obituary

Genevieve Stanfield (Peterson), age 92, passed away early Monday morning, November 11, 2024 at Welcome Nursing Home in Oberlin, Ohio. She was born at her family homestead located at the north end of Storer Valley in Mound Prairie Township, Houston, Minnesota on January 10, 1932 to Abraham and Hazel (Lanz) Peterson. This was the same farm settled by her Great Grandfather Johannes Pedersen who immigrated from Norway with his wife, father-in-law, and two children in 1870. Genevieve had fond memories of spending her youth living and working on their family farm and attending school at a one-room schoolhouse, all without most modern conveniences including indoor plumbing and electricity. Genevieve graduated high school at age 16 and moved to LaCrosse, Wisconsin where she pursued higher education and a career as a formal secretary for Gantert's Furniture Company. There, she eventually met her future husband Clyde while he was being discharged from the Army at nearby Camp McCoy following combat duty in the Korean War. They married in 1952 and after living for a short period of time in Elyria, they relocated to Wellington to raise their family which grew to 5 children. While Genevieve quit secretarial work for good when they left Elyria, she did begin to sew for others while staying at home. This work eventually became a full-time job for her that spanned decades as she became well known not only for clothing alterations, but also for her creativity in clothing design and custom clothing work. Genevieve hand made countless wedding dresses for brides and bride's maids who even traveled from out of state for her services as a talented seamstress. She continued this work even after Clyde's passing in 2009 just shy of 57 years of marriage. However, a decline in her health eventually forced her to reduce her work commitments as she finally had to end this nearly 60 year career shortly before moving into care at Welcome in Oberlin. Genevieve is survived by her 4 daughters, Marsha (Mark) Gilger of Doylestown, Ohio, Suanne (Steve) Murphy of Audubon, New Jersey, Robin Stanfield of Oberlin, Ohio, Janet Stanfield of Lorain, Ohio, her son Shayne (Kristie) Stanfield of Sylvania, Ohio, by 11 grandchildren, and by 11 great-grandchildren. Genevieve was preceded in death, again by her husband Clyde of almost 57 years, her parents Abraham and Hazel, her brother John Peterson, her sister Eunice Johnson, her sister Edith Brekke, her grandson Corey Barnes, and her grandson Michael Murphy. Visitation will be Friday, November 15 from 4pm to 7pm and funeral services will be held Saturday, November 16 at 10am, both at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main Street in Wellington. Burial will follow at Rochester Cemetery. Memorials can be sent in Genevieve's name to any charity of choice.  Expressions of sympathy may be shared online at www.norton-eastmanfuneralhome.com.
