IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gordon W.
Smith
May 17, 1936 – July 4, 2024
Gordon Wilfred Smith, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2024, at Birchaven Village in Findlay.
Gordon was born in Kalida, Ohio, in 1936 to Wilfred and Lela (Allgire) Smith. Their family moved to Norwalk when Gordon was in 6th grade. They precede him in death along with his beloved siblings, Donald Smith and Jacqueline Hohler. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Bonita "Bonnie" Landoll, the love of his life whom he met after graduating from St. Paul High School.
Gordon and Bonnie were blessed with six children: Linda (Jeff) Bash of Findlay, Laura (Michael Romanczyk) Smith of Toledo, Matthew (Angela) Smith of Westerville, Amy (Craig) Heflinger of Findlay, Mark (Kirsten) Smith of Westerville, and Christine (Jeff) Thomas of Cincinnati. Their family has grown with 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Gordon is also survived by many much-loved nieces and nephews and their families, as well.
Gordon originally worked as a steelworker and then joined the Norwalk Police Force where he served for five years. He became the plant manager of Cardox in Huron, Ohio. Gordon would work as plant manager of four different carbon dioxide facilities around Ohio until his retirement in 1991, when he and Bonnie moved back to his childhood home on Washington Road in Norwalk.
Gordon had a strong work ethic and a life-long love of being outdoors that included hunting, fishing, and raising livestock on the farm. He loved singing both in church and at home with his kids and grandkids, and nothing was more precious to him than family. An avid Parker and Winchester gun enthusiast, he especially enjoyed visiting on his front porch with friends or playing spirited games of euchre.
Friends and family are invited for a visitation on Friday, July 12, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Walker-Eastman-Heydinger Funeral Home, 98 W. Main Street, Norwalk.
