Grace E. Stentz, 95, of Nova, died Monday, December 13, 2010 at Kingston of Ashland after a lengthy illness. She was born January 5, 1915 to the late Hugh and Wayne (Briggs) McClaflin. Grace was a life long resident of the Nova and Ruggles area. She married her husband Howard O. on December 28, 1940.
She graduated from Ruggles High School in 1933. Grace was an elementary teacher in Wellington, New London, and Mapleton Local Schools. While at Mapleton, she was twice named teacher of the year. Grace was on the Ruggles-Troy school board and served as president during building of the 1957 addition. She was a member of the Nova United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Nova Lions Club and once chosen Lion of the year. Grace was a member of the Ashland Farm Bureau, served on the board of trustees, and enjoyed activities shared with the Merry Mixers farm bureau council. She also loved playing cards, camping with family and friends. She was proud that she had visited 49 of the 50 states and 6 European countries.
Survivors include her daughters, Patricia (Willard) Welch of Nova and Barbara (Larry) Bates of Sullivan; six grandchildren, Brian Welch, Kory Rowell, Katie Swartzel, Eric Bates, Marty Bates and Brad Bates and 8 great grandchildren. Grace was preceded in death by her husband, Howard O. in 1997 and her brothers, Norman and Giles McClaflin.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Friday, December 10, 2010 at the Nova Community United Methodist Church, 257 State Route 511, Nova where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday with Brother Harry Finkbone officiating. Burial will follow at the Nova Cemetery. Memorials if desired may be given to Nova Lions Club, c/o Lloyd and Mildred Carpenter, 768 Twp.
