Obituary

Helen Dorsey Patton Allen, 99, died Sunday, November 29, 2009 at the Elms Retirement Village in Wellington. On April 26, 1910, Helen was born in Poseyville, Indiana to the late Charles and Eliza (nee Smith) Dorsey. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana and a M.A.L.S. degree from the Peabody Library School in Nashville, Tennessee. Helen married Roy A. Patton on April 28, 1940; the couple enjoyed 32 years of marriage before his death in 1972. On December 27, 1975, she and William Brooks Allen were joined in marriage until his death in 1980. Helen was a Wellington resident since April of 1991. Helen taught High School English and History at Owensville, Indiana and Hot Springs, Montana. She was the High School Librarian for both Wellington and Ashland schools; Helen was a retired Emeritus Professor of libranianship at Central Washington State University in Ellensburg, Washington. As an Emeritus member and Past President of the Washington State Association of School Librarians and an Emeritus member of the Washington Association Educational Communication and Technology, Helen showed a passion for literary education. Helen was a Past Matron and 80 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her other memberships included Delta Kappa Gamma, The First United Methodist Church of Wellington, Deborah Circle, Town and Country Club and the Literary Club. Survivors include 2 sons, Stephen A. Patton of Cambridge, ID and James R. (Constance) Patton of Lithia Springs, GA; 2 daughters, Ruth Campbell of Stevensville, MT and Margaret (Gary) Beal of Wellington, OH; 15 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. In addition to her husbands, Helen was preceded in death by her son, Charles D. Patton; son-in-law, Richard Campbell and a brother, James. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 4 from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 S. Main St, Wellington with Rev. Lea Mahan officiating. Burial will take place at Walnut Hills Cemetery in Fort Branch, Indiana. Memorials may be directed to New Life Hospice, 5255 N. Abbe Rd., Elyria, OH 44035.
