Jack Richard Sweet, 85, of Galion, died Monday, September 27, at home following a long battle with Parkinson's Disease.
A native of Greenwich Township (Huron Co.), he was born on November 7, 1924, son of the late Frank Clyde Sweet and Laura Estelle (Brown) Sweet. Jack attended high school in Greenwich and Monroeville before serving his country during World War II in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Army's 43rd Division, 192nd Field Artillery Battalion. His tour included campaigns as a 155mm Howitzer gunner in New Guinea, the Northern Solomon Islands and Luzon.
He married Ruby Vivien Hutchison on April 8, 1944 in Auckland, New Zealand. After the war, he co-owned and operated a masonry business in Auckland until he returned to the United States in 1957.
Jack worked in the telephone industry for the majority of his career, including operations and engineering positions with General Telephone Company of California, Automatic Electric Company in Northlake, Illinois and United Telephone Company of Ohio in Mansfield, from where he retired in 1989.
He enjoyed genealogical research, travel and spending time with his family. Jack was a member of 192nd F.A.Bn Association, the AMVETS Post #1979 in Galion, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and the American Legion.
A former Lexington resident, he is survived by five sons, Dr. Brian Sweet of Apple Valley, California; David (Cynthia) Sweet of Lewis Center; Andrew Sweet of Mansfield; Daniel (LuAnn) Sweet of Columbus; Christopher Sweet of Galion; and daughter Teresa Sweet of Galion, 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Loretta Dorothy Sweet , wives Patricia Ann (Brown) Sweet (married January 20, 1959), and Mary (Scott) Sweet (married February 14, 1995), brothers Frank Junior Sweet and Harold James Sweet, grandson Gabriel Sweet and daughter-in-laws Susan R. ( Williams) Sweet and Joyce (Brown) Sweet.
Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 30, 2010 at the Eastman Funeral Home, 49 W. Main St. in Greenwich where services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 1, with Pastor Jeff Shaull officiating. Burial with military funeral honors will be held immediately following at Ninevah Road Cemetery near Greenwich.
