Obituary

James D. Files, 83, of Norwalk, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, music, and service. Born on December 1, 1941, in Cleveland, Ohio, Jim was raised in the small town of Milan, where he developed a lifelong love for music, old cars, and good company.

Jim proudly served his country for a brief time in the United States Navy, receiving an honorable discharge. He later dedicated much of his life to public service as a police officer in both Sandusky and Norwalk, and as a dispatcher for Huron County. He retired from the Ohio Veterans Home, where he continued his career as a trusted dispatcher.

A man of many talents, Jim had a passion for photography and owned his own studio, "The Picture Place," in Norwalk.  His lens captured countless weddings, graduations, and family milestones across the region. But it was music that truly fed his soul. Jim was a gifted guitarist who played in multiple bands throughout his life, always happiest with a guitar in hand and The Rolling Stones playing in the background.

Jim was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and ability to make others smile. He adored his dogs, Scooby and Sandy, and cherished every moment spent with family and friends.

He is preceded in passing by his beloved wife, Molly (West) Files, in 2015; his parents, Robert and Gladys Files; and sisters, Jane Solen and Helen Synder.

He is survived by his sister, Carol Diaz, of Greenville, SC; children, David Files, Sherri (Michael) Oates, and Kimberly (Tabitha Wilkens) Files; his grandchildren, Ashley, Devan, Heath, and Olivia; and several great-grandchildren.
