James Vernon Sumpter

James Vernon Sumpter, 81, passed away on September 17, 2026, at Wesleyan Village. On July 2, 1945, James was born in Oberlin to James Clifford and Orpha (nee Smarr) Sumpter. He grew up in Wellington and graduated from Wellington High School in 1963.

Following graduation, James enlisted in the United States Army and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. He worked at US Steel & Progressive Processing for many years.

A man who loved to tinker, James could often be found taking things apart and putting them back together. He excelled at DIY remodeling projects. A man with a caring heart, James enjoyed doing things for others, including taking people shopping and to appointments. He also had a deep love for country, gospel and blue grass music.

James is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer Sumpter, of Algonquin, IL; his brothers, Harold (Donna), Jack (Patty), and Michael (Tiffany) Sumpter; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Sumpter-Pugh.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 23 from 4 p.m. until the 7 p.m. funeral service at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 S. Main St., Wellington. A graveside service with military rites will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Thursday at the Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.
