Obituary

Dr. James Wight, 79, of Bluffton SC and formerly of Wellington, died Saturday, October 31, 2015 at Grace Hospital in Lakewood. He was born on May 16, 1936 in Wellington, the son of the late Carroll and Vernice (nee Lance) Wight, Jim was a lifelong resident of Wellington and a 1954 graduate of Wellington High School. After graduation he attended Ohio Wesleyan University, graduating in 1958, and then attended The Ohio State University obtaining his Optometric Doctorate in 1964. Dr. Wight served in the United States Air Force for three years between his undergraduate degree and his doctorate. Following graduation he opened his practice in Wellington which he served at until December of 2011. In 1990 he opened a second practice in Vermilion. Jim was a talented musician, playing the trumpet from the fifth grade on. As a youth he attended Interlochen Music camp where he met his future wife. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta at Ohio Wesleyan. Jim was a very active member of his community, serving on the zoning commission for 25 years, as well as a member of the Wellington Eagles, The AmVets, and the American Legion. He was a member of the Ohio Optometric Association and served as its president. Jim was very active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Wellington, and served on several committees. He was also a member of the Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Bluffton SC. Jim enjoyed spending time boating and was a member of the Vermilion Boat Club; he also served as commodore of the Vermilion Power Boats Yacht Club and the President of the Board of Directors of Vermilion Power Boats Inc. He also enjoyed fishing, playing bridge with friends or being out on the golf course. Jim is survived by his wife of 57 years Barbara (nee Baltzly) Wight; children Jim (Wendy) Wight Jr., of Hinsdale IL, Dianne (Roger) Jarosz of Bluffton SC, David (Sharon) Wight of El Cajon CA, and Lisa (Dan) Dobinson of Vermilion; grandchildren Olivia, Nathalie, Nathan, Jared, Rachael, Garret, Melanie, Hannah, Danielle; great-grandchildren Grace and Caleb. He was preceded in death by his sister Molly Adams. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2015 at the Wellington First Congregational United Church of Christ, 140 South Main, Wellington, 44090, beginning at 10 a.m. with Rev. Brian Burke officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be directed to the Church in Jim's memory.
