Obituary

James C. 'Jim' Worcester, age 90, of Pittsfield Township died Tuesday, September 4, 2007 following a short illness. James was born April 7, 1917 in Oberlin. Mr. Worcester was a 1934 graduate of Oberlin High school, where he played basketball, and he graduated from the Oberlin School of Commerce in 1935. James worked for the Lorain Steel Mill and he also farmed on the family farm. Mr. Worcester served in the United States Navy as a Seabee in the Pacific on Kwajalein and Wake Islands from 1943 through 1945. James, a master carpenter, helped to build an addition and gymnasium for the Franklin School in Elyria, and then went on to build many custom homes for Clark Brothers. Later in life, he was a self-employed carpenter working throughout the Oberlin and Wellington area. James served on the Pittsfield Township Zoning Board. He was active in saving the American Legion Ball Field after the closing of the Legion building. He was also involved in rebuilding the Pittsfield church and parsonage after the 1965 tornado. James enjoyed fishing and hunting, and played in numerous bowling leagues. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed selling apples. Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Lucille Portman Worcester, three sons, James C. Worcester Jr. of Golden Colorado, Charles L. Worcester of Vermilion, Ohio, and David W. Worcester of Pittsfield Township, 4 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Mr. Worcester is also survived by one brother, Phillip 'Buss' Worcester of Akron and two sisters, Eleanor Coe of Amherst, and Maretta 'Peg' Van Ausdale of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents Daniel Calvert and Magdalene Lavilla Worcester. A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 8, 2007 at 2 pm at the Pittsfield East Cemetery on State Route 303, Reverend Kenneth Gerhardt will officiate. A reception will follow at the Pittsfield Community Church. Memorials, if desired may be given to a charity of the donor's choice.
