Joan M. (nee Holmes) Durham Eaton, age 73, of Wellington died Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at her home surrounded by family following a long battle with cancer. She was born in Lodi on March 14, 1934 to the late Claude and Irene (nee Mosher) Holmes. Joan was raised in Brighton and was a 1952 graduate of Brighton High School, where she was active with the Alumni Association.
Joan worked as a school secretary for the Lorain County Joint Vocational School and also as a bank teller at Elyria Savings and Trust. She was active in the Order of Eastern Star and was appointed to Grand Esther of the Grand Family for the State of Ohio in 1989, the Temple Chapter Worthy Matron in 1987, and the Sullivan Worthy Matron in 1997. As a member of the Brighton United Methodist Church, she was a member of the United Methodist Women and served on various committees. Joan was on the board of Well-Help and enjoyed playing the piano in many churches throughout the area.
Survivors include her five children, Becky (Steve) Duelley of Xenia, Terry (Kathy) Durham of Sandusky, Tom (Debbie) Durham of Pittsfield, Tim (Melissa) Durham of Zanesville, and Beth Gnandt of Elyria; 12 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and her companion Dale Matcham. Joan is also survived by her sister, Joyce Browand of Brighton and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Donald Durham; her second husband, Dale Eaton; and her sisters, Dorothy Greene and Marjorie Schubert.
Friends may call from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm on Friday, January 25th at the Brighton United Methodist Church, 51011 State Rte 18, with Order of Eastern Star services at 7:45 pm. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Saturday with Pastor Christine Bell officiating. Burial will follow at Brighton Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to New Life Hospice, 5255 N.
