John H. Crane, 88, died Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at the Ohio Veterans Home in Sandusky. Born in 1921 to the late Daisy and Carl Crane, John was raised in the Lakewood area and lived on the west side of Cleveland until his retirement. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Millersburg where they built a home and they later moved to Wooster. The last few years, John and his wife, Alta, were Wellington residents.
During WWII John served his country in the U.S. Navy as an electrician on the USS Weedon, a destroyer escort. After his military service, he became a life member of the American Legion. John retired from Ohio Bell after starting as a lineman and working his way up to supervisor. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America Retired Chapter 80 and the Destroyer Escort Historical Foundation. John had a passion for repairing things, whether it was around the house or anywhere else. He also enjoyed gardening and bird watching.
John is survived by daughters, Gail M. Thompson of Gilford, CT, Barb (Steve) Rollins of Wellington; son, Thomas (Yu Ying) Crane of Manassa, VA; 7 grandchildren, Kelly, Michel, Andrew, Thomas, David, Crissy, and 'Boomer'; and 4 great grandchildren, Milo, Amanda, George and Lily. In 2006, John was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Alta Crane.
A private burial will take place in the Lakewood Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ohio Veterans Home, Attn. General Fund, 3416 Columbus Ave., Sandusky, OH 44870, or to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, Ohio 44870.
