IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Jorge Hernan
Gomez
May 23, 1955 – November 5, 2024
Jorge Gomez, age 69, passed away peacefully in Wellington, Ohio on November 5th, 2024. Jorge Hernán Gómez Roldán was born the 5th of six children to Jorge Gómez González and Lúz Marina Roldán Aguilera, baptized at the cathedral of San Fernando in Cali, Valle del Cauca, Colombia, on May 23, 1955. Growing up in Colombia he enjoyed fishing, basketball, and time with the Gómez and Garcia families while living near the sugar cane factory of Central Castilla.
Jorge valued family, justice, education, and beauty in all its forms. He delighted in flowers, beautiful landscapes, poetry, music, and animals. He enjoyed philosophy, well reasoned debate, and maximizing any opportunity to laugh or dance.
Jorge received the degree of Juris Doctor from the University of San Buenaventura, working many years as an attorney and serving in active leadership of JC's International Colombia before moving to Huntington Township, Ohio in 1990 with his wife Rita and their children Alex and Gabe.
Ever striving, Jorge Hernán immediately enrolled in an English Immersion program through Ashland University and there earned his MBA. Jorge worked in international sales and then in the insurance industry for decades, covering wide territory as an independent agent from Lorain to Willard to his SSIP office in Mansfield. A man of strong principle, Jorge was proud to become a US citizen. He was continually dedicated to his work and pursued continuing education in his field to the highest level possible until his health prevented him.
Wherever he went, Jorge endeared himself to many and was known for being friendly and jovial. Jorge was a great story teller, inspired by Saint-Exupéry's "The Little Prince" to tend roses and many other flowers at his home in Sullivan, Ohio where he lived with Marilyn, his wife of 23 years.
Jorge Hernan Gomez is survived by his wife Marilyn Gomez; his daughter Alexandra (Gregory) Robbins, son Juan Gabriel (Samantha) Gomez and their mother Rita Rollin; step sons Jim (Beth) Unger and Ken Unger; and his siblings Jorge Luis Gómez Roldán, Luz Maria Gómez Roldán, Clara Helena Gómez de Niño, and Andrés Gómez Roldán.
Jorge cherished all of his family and especially loved being a grandpa, doting on all the children in his large blended and extended family.
He leaves behind beloved grandchildren: Liberty Robbins, Asher Robbins, Charlee Gomez, Eliza Jane Gomez, Harvey Gomez,
Casey (Kring) Unger, Ashley Unger, Mariah Unger, Jacob Unger, Jeremy Unger, and adored great grandchildren Rylee and Ravynn Unger.
Jorge will be missed by his many nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, friends, and colleagues across Ohio and Colombia.
He is preceded in death by his father Jorge, his mother Lúz, and his brother Fernando.
A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, November 22 at 5 p.m. at United Church of Huntington 26677 State Rte. 58, Wellington, OH 44090 with luncheon to follow. A memorial mass in Cali is also planned. Condolences for the Gomez family can be given at www.norton-eastmanfuneralhome.com.
