Obituary

Joseph 'Joe' Howell, 83, of New London, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at Fisher-Titus Medical Center, Norwalk after a sudden illness. He was born in Huron County, lived in the Greenwich area, and has resided in New London since the mid 1950's. Joe proudly served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theatre. He graduated from Andrews Barber College of Toledo and served as the local Barber in New London and retired as the Greenwich Barber after over 50 years. Joe also worked at the former Ohio Body Manufacturing Company of New London and was a mail carrier. He was a Girl Scout leader, Boy Scout Explorer leader and a 4-H advisor. Joe was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and of the Greenwich American Legion. He enjoyed golfing and bowling on a league. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending their sporting events. He is survived by his children, Lula Eaton (Chuck) Campbell of Grove City, Paula (Kenneth) Sturgill of Plymouth and Collette (Steve) Day of Mansfield. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Mary E. Howell on December 11, 1999; brothers, Herald, William and Paul Howell, an infant brother and 3 sisters, Evelyn Girton, Opal Burwell and Virgil Howell. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. with a 7:30 p.m. Masonic service on Friday, May 14th at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London where services will be held on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Edwards Grove Cemetery, Greenwich. Memorials may be given in Joe's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148.
