Larry J. Oney, 69, of New London, died January 14, 2013. He was born on January 20, 1943, in Greenwich, to the late Fred and Wanda (Kennard) Oney. He lived most of his life in the Greenwich area and graduated from South Central High School in 1961.
He is a U.S. Navy veteran and served during Vietnam. Larry worked for CSX railroad for 36 years. Larry and his wife Mary built Freedom Valley Campground where they owned and operated it for 13 years.
Larry was a member of the Ripley Church. He served as a youth group leader for 10 years and a 4-H advisor for 15 years.
He enjoyed coon hunting and spending time with his family.
Survived by his wife of 43 years, Mary (Coy) Oney; children Margi (Dewayne) Henderson of New London, Mike (Beth) Oney of New London and Tara (Bob) Smith of MN; grandchildren, Josh Henderson, Jeremy Henderson, Brooke (Derek) Greene, Jenn Pelton, Mike Pelton, Lexi Smith and Luke Smith; great grandchildren, Claire Hoell, Aiden Greene and Carter Pelton. He is also survived by brothers, Alfred (Corrine) Oney, Mitchell (Shirley) Oney, Gerald (Connie) Oney and Raymond Oney all of Greenwich and Gordon (Kathy) Oney of North Fairfield; brother and sister-in-laws, Roger (Evelyn) Coy of Willard, Alfred (Sue) Coy of Avon Lake, Sonny Coy of New London and Randy Garner of North Fairfield; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his brother, Ronald in 1951; niece, Carol (Oney) Flint; nephew, David Oney; father and mother-in-law, Calvin and Erma Coy and sister-in-laws, Virginia Garner and June Coy;
Visitation Thursday, January 17th from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Ripley Church, 4130 S. Edwards Rd, Greenwich where a service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. with Pastor Eric Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Edwards Grove Cemetery with military honors. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Ripley Church.
