Obituary

LaVerne Phyllis Biddinger Snyder, age 96, of Nova died Monday, February 18, 2008 at her home. LaVerne was born February 4, 1912 in Troy Township, Ohio, daughter of the late Clayton Orville and Rena Iona (Landon) Biddinger. She graduated from Troy Centralized School in 1929. LaVerne sold cosmetics for the former California Perfume Company, which later became known as Avon, until 1930. She also worked at the Nova Post Office for several years. LaVerne married Lawrence Snyder on September 3, 1931 and moved to a farm in Rochester Twp., where she resided until 2004. She was an active farm wife; LaVerne did bookkeeping for the family dairy farm, took care of the animals, and helped produce butter, maple syrup, and apple butter. She was an advisor for the Rochester 4-H Club and active within the group for 12 years. LaVerne, along with her husband, was active in the State Grange and the New London Grange, where she held the office of Chairman of Women's Activities and also Subordinate Lecturer. She was also active in the American Farm Bureau. LaVerne was a member of the Rochester Methodist Church, and a former member of the Rochester Historical Society. She enjoyed showing flowers at the Annual Garden Club and Flower Show and was a member of the Rochester Garden Club. LaVerne and Lawrence traveled with the Wayfarer Group Travel and Grange Members. They toured the West entirely by train and took the inside passage to Alaska via the 'Princess Patricia.' The couple also visited the eastern Canadian provinces and took a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi. In 1961, along with their daughter Lauretta, they traveled to Germany to visit their son in law and visited eight countries and principalities. When the couple sold their cows, they spent time researching the Biddinger family and compiled a book listing 13 generations of descendants. Survivors include her two daughters, LaDonna Snyder and Laverne (Pete) Hensen of Nova and Lauretta Snyder Wilcox of Norwalk; four grandchildren and their spouses, Sharon (Dan) Wilcox Griffin of New London, Sandra (Glen) Wilcox Wells of Worms, Germany, Stuart (Shelley) Wilcox of Atlanta, GA, Oron (Annette) Wilcox III of Norwalk; 15 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren, including three step great grandchildren and three adopted great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Jessie Biddinger Carrick of Amherst. LaVerne was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Lawrence in October of 2000; a brother and sister-in-law, LaRue and Elenora Biddinger; a son-in-law, Oron Wilcox II, and a great granddaughter, Autum Ray Hare. Friends may call from 6-8 pm on Monday, February 25th at Eastman Funeral Home, 200 W. Main St., New London and again on Tuesday from 1 until the time of funeral service at 2 pm. Rev. Christine Bell and Rev. Daniel Griffin will officiate the service and burial will follow at the Nova Cemetery. Memorials may be given to the Rochester United Methodist Church, 201 S.
