Lawrence Patrick “Pat” Furlong was born on May 8, 1937, in Bellevue, Ohio, to the late Leo and Catherine Furlong. He graduated from Sacred Heart Seminary in Geneva, Illinois, in 1955 and from the University of Toledo in 1961. He married Kathleen Rospert in 1960.
Pat is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen; his sons, Patrick (Dee) of Fremont, Dr. Dennis (Samantha) of Norwalk, Bob (Michelle) of Perrysburg, and Dr. Kevin (Tracey) of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He had twelve grandchildren, Jordan, Morgan, Delaney, Jeremy, Derek, Dylan, Erin, Brandon, Connor, Brooke, Quinn, and Claire Furlong. Two great-grandchildren, Georgia Furlong and Ella Grinonneau. He is also survived by his sister, Sr. Mary Beatrice, SND, brothers-in-law Thomas (Joann) Rospert, Dick (Roni) Rospert, Jerry (Connie) Rospert, and Bill (Michelle) Rospert, and sister-in-law Noreen Furlong, along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Sr. Mary Leo Furlong, SND; Ann Friend, James Furlong, and Sr. Mary Joan Furlong, SND.
Family was at the center of Pat’s life. He spent countless evenings cheering on his children and grandchildren at football games, golf courses, cross-country meets, basketball games, baseball fields, soccer matches, and musical and dance performances. Through his loving, patient, kind, and understanding nature, Pat set a wonderful example of what it means to be a Christian husband and father.
Pat worked as a Certified Public Accountant as owner of his own business in Fremont, and later at Payne, Hammersmith, and Nichols Upon retiring, he served as a bookkeeper at Norwalk St. Paul. He was committed to serving his community, having served as president of the Norwalk Jaycees, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce, and the Fremont St. Joseph Booster Club. He also volunteered at Fremont St. Joseph and Norwalk St. Paul parishes, serving as a lector and participating in various parish committees. In addition, he took on the rewarding, if sometimes thankless, task of coaching his sons in Little League baseball.
Inspired by his three sisters who entered religious life, Pat also served as an associate to the Sisters of Notre Dame of Toledo, continuing his commitment to faith and service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Notre Dame at sndusa.org/donatetoledo/.
