Obituary

Leo J. 'Jerry' Sayles, 77, of Sullivan, passed away in the morning on December 15, 2009, at his residence amongst family. Born in Gary, IN on April 11, 1932, he moved to northeast Ohio at the age of 10 and spent the last 32 years in Sullivan where he enjoyed spending time with his family, woodworking, and operating the Sullivan Market. Leo is preceded in death by his parents, Leo J. and Anne (Baluk) Sayles. He is survived by his wife, Shirley, whom he met in 1948 and married in 1955. Together they are the loving parents of Melanie (Dan) Hawley of Sullivan, Leo (Emily) Sayles of Grove City and Leslie (Bryan) Denbow of Sullivan. Leo is also survived by a sister, Jeanne Lewis of North Palm Beach, Florida. When Leo relocated to Ohio as a child, he resided in Lakewood and Strongsville, and graduated from Strongsville High School in 1950. He attended Kent State University, and served in the United States Coast Guard from 1952-1955. Leo developed into a strong business owner while working alongside his mother at Sayles Pharmacy in Strongsville for over 30 years. In October of 1977, Leo and Shirley relocated to Sullivan and together they opened The Sullivan Market. Leo is the proud 'Papa' to nine grandchildren, Laura (Matt), Morgan, Mary, Bret, Heather, Ashley, Sarah, Andrea and Lee, and one great grandchild, Luke, as well as a caring uncle to numerous nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held at the Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main Street, Wellington, on Thursday, Dec. 17 from 5-9 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held Friday Dec. 18 starting at 11 a.m. with an hour of visitation beginning at 10 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 512 North Main, Wellington. Reverend James Reymann officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805, or to St. Patrick's Church, 512 North Main, Wellington, Ohio 44090.
