Obituary

Mary Beth (nee Stearns) Derikito, 78, of Huntington, passed away at the Elms Nursing Home on Wednesday, May 12, 2016. She was born on June 11, 1937 in Elyria to the late Newton W. and Merel (nee Leesberg) Stearns. Mary Beth graduated from Lakewood High School in 1955 and went on to attend Nursing School. Mary Beth lived in West Virginia and Pennsylvania before she moved to Lorain County in 1966 and began working at Fairview Nursing School. A true public servant, she spent her time as a township trustee from 1990 until resigning in 2016. As a member of the ambulance board, Citizens Against Pollution, and a volunteer for Voices for Children, Mary Beth was an advocate for her community and her neighbors. She was an avid reader and loved animals, especially llamas and sheep. Mary Beth also had a passion for spinning and knitting and was a member of the spinning guild. Time spent socializing brought her great joy and she looked forward to Monday lunches with friends. Mary Beth is survived by her children, Alan (Connie) Derikito of Columbus, Gary (Kim) Derikito of St. Peter's, MO, and Laura (Jeroen) Schlatmann of the Netherlands; grandchildren, Hayley (Nick), Emily, Shelby, Alex, Grecio, Quintin, Bryan (Megan Elizabeth), Michael (Cindy), and Megan Sue; great granddaughter, Lily; and sister, Nancy (Ronald) Rife of Avon Lake. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grecio, in February of 1989. Friends and family will be received on Monday, May 23 from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m. at Norton-Eastman Funeral Home, 370 South Main Street, Wellington. A Celebrations of Marybeth's life will be held on Tuesday, May 24 beginning at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Huntington A time of fellowship will follow at the church Hall. A private burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Huntington TWP.
