Mary Louise 'Mezzie' Johnson, age 57 of New London, died Friday, January 9, at her home. She was born September 28, 1951 in New London, daughter of the late Roy F. Johnson I. and Mary L. Burton. She was a graduate of New London High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice/Psychology from Ashland University. She later earned her Master's degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Cincinnati. Mary was a Vietnam Era, 10 year Veteran of the U.S. Army Military Police Corps. and K-9 Corps, having served in Europe and the Continental U.S. She was awarded the Army Good Conduct Medal as well as an Army Commendation Medal for her contributions to the army's domestic violence patrols of the 1970's. She earned Expert Marksmanship medals for her abilities with a .45 caliber pistol, .38 caliber revolver, and the M-16 rifle. Mary was a licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor III and worked for 5 years with the Ohio Dept. of Rehabilitation and Corrections systems to develop and implement an intensive program for DUI offenders. She was a full time police officer for the Norwalk City Police (first full time woman) and the New London City Police in the 1980's. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, New London.
She is survived by her daughter, Davia L Ross and son in law, Paul Robert Johnson; her son, Troy R. Ross; one grandson, Ethan D. Johnson; her half-sister, Marlene Atkinson; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Roy F. Johnson, II, and her half-brother, Robert E. Humphrey.
Friends will be received at the church Thursday, January 15, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the rosary at 10:40 a.m. A memorial Mass will begin at 11:00 a.m., at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 18 Park Ave., New London with Rev.
